| Randy Mecca, a former patient of TSRH, has been walking with the aid of prosthetics since the age of two. He was born with the condition known as PFFD (Proxi-Femoral Focal Deficiency) which affected his left leg and hip, and became an amputee at age 25. He was active in sports as a child, Wrestled in High School and College and has overcome many obstacles in life relying on his tenacity and sense of humor to get him through. Performing stand-up comedy since the age of 16, his “One-Legged Elvis” and other amputee characters have entertained crowds for over 30 years. A former patient of TSHR, Mecca designed the Disc Golf course here at the hospital and helped develop programs for recreational therapy based on the game. He is an active member of the Dallas Amputee Network, an ACA Certified Peer Visitor, and was recently selected to represent Texas as a member of the Amputee Coalition of America’s Volunteer Outreach Team. He is an activist in the fight for Insurance Parity in Texas and has spoken at the State Capitol in Austin as well as on numerous TV shows here in Dallas and coined the phrase “We Want Parity Not Charity” used in Parity campaigns. He enjoys umpiring baseball for several leagues in the Dallas area, and also announces and sings the National Anthem at various sporting events each year. He is best know by the P.A.L.S. as “The Frisbee Guy” and has been attending PALS meetings and events for the past 4 years, distributing Frisbees and giving the kids a taste of the game.
